Build a Lightsaber at Savi’s Workshop | Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge

May The Force Be With You

Building your own personal lightsaber at Savi’s Workshop is one of the most memorable experiences and an absolute must for any aspiring Jedi (or Sith).

When entering the Black Spire Outpost (on the planet Batuu) within Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, you will be completed immersed in all things Star Wars.  Guests will see a replica of the Millennium Falcon to witnessing Stormtroopers patrolling the area.  And you just may run into some of your favorite Star Wars characters as well!

Savi’s Workshop blends well and if you did not specifically know what you are looking for, then you might just walk right by without giving it a second thought.

About the Experience

Building a lightsaber at Savi’s is about a 20 minute experience from start to finish.  Once inside this secret workshop guests will be lead by a group call the “Gatherers” who assist with the building of your lightsaber.

Prior to entering the workshop guests will chose from one of four (4) separate “hilt” themes.  The hilt theme along with an accompanying “cloisonne’ pin” that will allow the Gatherers to identify the builders lightsaber selection.  These themes are as follows:

  • Peace and Justice: Comprised of scraps from crashed starships as well as the fallen Jedi temple.
  • Power and Control: From remnants of the dark side and the Sith homeworld.
  • Elemental Nature:  Comprising elements and energy from living things making up the Force.
  • Protection and Defense: Reconnecting the builder with the ancient teaching of the Force.

Once inside, the lightsaber builder will chosee a kyber crystal which is the heart of the lightsaber.  These come in red, blue, green or violet and reflect the color of the lightsaber blade itself.

  • Blue based were used by Rey, Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi.
  • The green blades were used by Master Yoda, Luke Skywalker and Ahsoka Tano.
  • The violet blage was used by Master Mace Windu.
  • The red blade (representing power) was used by Darth Vadar, Darth Maul and Kylo Ren.

After the builder chooses a crystal, the building begins.  Gatherers provide a box of parts including the hilt and the builders choose from the following:

  • Two of four sleeve options
  • One of two emitter options
  • One of two pommel cap options
  • One of two activation plates / switch options

While the assembling of the lightsaber can be a bit difficult, there are a number of Gatherers who are present that are happy to assist with every step in the process.

Once assembled, the Gathers insert the lightsabers into individual stabilization chambers where the hilt is then connected to the blade.  After a few words of wisdom from Master Yoda, the head Gatherer tells all the builders to grab their hilt and active their new lightsaber.

With the music playing and all the builders in the room showing their new lightsabers, it is quite a moving experience!

Savi’s Workshop Lightsaber Build Cost

Savi’s Workshop – Handbuilt Lightsabers at the Walt Disney World Resort costs $199.99 plus tax per builder for a total $212.99 (not including park admission).  This includes the 20-minute experience, a high quality lightsaber and a carrying case.

Like most things at the Disney theme parks, there are upgrade options for your lightsaber at additional fees. Visit Dok-Ondar’s Den of Antiquities to see the additional parts and customizations.

The experience is limited to one building and one guest.  Although there are no age requirements shown on the Disney Parks website, they recommend that this experience be limited to guests ages five (5) and older – but at least one person in the party is required to be at least 14 years of age.

Based on our impression of this experience as well as the cost, we would recommend it for guests around the age of 10.  During our visit to Savi’s Workshop, there were almost as many adults as there were kinds under 14.

While the cost of this experience is fairly significant, we do feel that it is completely worthwhile as compared to other Disney experiences.  Builders get an amazing souvenir (the lightsaber itself) along with a memorable experience.  Since the builder can bring along a guest, it’s almost two for the price of one.

Considering the higher quality lightsabers of Amazon range from around $100 to more than $200, building a lightsaber at Savi’s Workshop is competely worth the cost.

Savi’s Workshop Reservations

Reservations are highly recommended and availability for your requested day can be checked on the Disney web site.  Due to recent social distancing guidelines, availability has been reduced so space is very limited.

Depending on availability, same day reservations are possible but unlikely.  However, Endless Summer Florida was able to get a reservation on the same day as our visit (yes we were very lucky).

Guests with reservations should check in with the cast members at least 15 minutes in advance of their reservation time.  All reservations are not transferable and Disney does not allow them to be sold, traded or bartered (which makes us think that someone tried to do that in the past).

So the next time you plan on visiting Disney’s Hollywood Studios, make your reservation as early as possible to ensure that you get a spot at the Gatherers table.  The experience is a bit pricey but one you will not regret.
